HOLY INFANT ACADEMY was the old name of the school which was founded in 1924 by the late Msgr. Sofronio Hacbang, then Parish priest of the Sto. Niņo Parish, Tacloban City. Finding it hard to administer it himself, he invited the Benedictine Sisters (OSB) to administer the school. Struggling their way through, the Sisters had to tread on hard and sharp stones of hardships and problems, up to the outbreak of the second world war.
In 1951, the OSB sisters left the school and the diocese looked for some lay people to run the school. From 1951-1954 Holy Infant Academy was under the administration of Miss Elvira Jimenez. during this time, the Bishop of Palo. Msgr. Lino Gonzaga went to Ireland looking for Religious Sisters to take over the administration of the school. He went to the Religious Sisters of Mercy Convent at St. Maries of the Isle in Cork, Ireland and asked the Mother Superior to send Sisters to the Philippines.
On September 23, 1954, the first group of Irish Religious Sisters of Mercy arrived in Tacloban and eventually took over the administration of Holy Infant Academy. Except for the Elementary Department which was co-educational at the start, the school was exclusively for girls. In 1965, with the opening of the college programs such as Education and Liberal Arts, the school changed its name from Holy Infant Academy to HOLY INFANT COLLEGE. The school started accepting male students in High School in the school year 1969-1970.
However, in 1972, the school which was then located at corner Real and P. Gomez Streets (main streets of Tacloban City) just beside the Sto. Niņo Church was razed to the ground. So, the Holy Infant College (HIC) had to be transferred to a land acquired by the Religious Sisters of Mercy in Utap Hills. the place where the RSM Convent and college building were located.
HIC continuously expanded, to provide the students a healthy environment for learning. New buildings have been constructed, and relevant courses offered.
HOLY INFANT COLLEGE has CHED recognized programs in Education, Business Administration, and Health Sciences. It is a consistent placer in the Radiologic Technology Board Examinations since the year 2000. In 2007, HOLY INFANT COLLEGE produced its first batch of Licensed Nurses.
