CELEBRATING MERCY DAY 2009
One hundred and seventy nine (179) years ago, a woman of God, named Catherine Elizabeth McAuley, armed with tremendous faith, courageously started a religious congregation in Dublin, Ireland together with two companions to dedicate themselves to works of Mercy among the poor needing education and protection from the dangers and threats of exploitation; and to give consolation to the sick and the deprived.
Fifty six (56) years ago, six of the followers of Mother McAuley from St. Maries of the Isle in Cork, Ireland arrived in the Philippines to respond to the challenging invitation of the Most Reverend Lino Gonzaga, then Bishop of Palo, Leyte, to take over the administration of the Holy Infant Academy. Sr. Joseph Mary Corcoran, Sr. Mary Gertrude Ryan, Sr. Mary Assumpta Hayes, Sr. Mary Canisius Murphy, Sr. Mary Emmanuel Brown and Sr. Mary Anunciata Desmond were the ones who braved the rough oceans and stormy seas to pioneer the mission of Mercy in this part of the world, the Pearl of the Orient Seas.
Together with generous and dedicated people helping us, we paddle the canoe through thick and thin armed with faith like our Reverend Foundress, trusting in Jesus who is always with us in our boat. May we keep strengthening our bond - Sisters, mission partners, Mercy children, friends, benefactors, and our loved ones - so we can proclaim to the world that God's mercy triumphs in the midst of trials and tribulations.
We, therefore, greet everyone connected with the Mercy family on this God-blest moment in our history, a milestone of and for Mercy. Do help us attain our vision. "In God's mercy we serve with joy!"
